Sun, September 18, 2005 - 7:07 PMYup, a professional slacking supervisor...... I like to critique people being slackers while slacking myself ;) I'm in KC but we do occasion gigs in Lawrence. Actually I wouldn't even take the gigs but I like knowing Jemira is closer...(creepy grin, twitch twitch)....she's purdy! ;) -

Satowi is hot and a great dancer - don't let her fool you. (EWG)
You still doing the gig on the 29th down at the Gaslight? I hope so cause I was going to put on my little black dress and knee-hi leather boots and stomp on down and let the art wash over me. I need a night off from teaching!

Re: not from Lawrence....
Mon, September 19, 2005 - 1:59 PMI was first in Lawrence in 1963!!! Whew! I haven't lived there since 1989 but I still consider it my hometown! The late 60s where the most fun in Lawrence! What a hippie town it was!!! It's nice to hear there is such a great bellydance community there now. I am great friends with lots of bellydancers here in Wichita.

Mon, September 19, 2005 - 7:27 PMLOL, you win Elk Dreamer!
I've only been in Lawrence for 9 years and it's changed SOOOO much. When I landed here it was still very much a hippie town and that's why I loved it. Wish I could have seen it back in the '60's (sigh). Lucky you.
Last 6-7 years have brought so many changes it doesn't even feel like it's the same town - it a city now. Those lovely (ack) JO. county people started moving here from KC and nothing is the same. I used to love summer cause all the collage kids left - every morning was like Sunday, no traffic - now it's hell. The kids don't leave, their parents came with them - they stay year round.
On the up side it's been good for teaching dance! And I get more new belly dancers every week. Thinking about opening a studio in town instead of using my home one - would be nice not to have a horde of people running through the house (G). It's hell keeping it clean all the time.
How's the dancing in Wichita these days? I haven't been down there in a few years. Would be strange going down there and not seeing Amira - I loved her. She was always so nice to me.

Re: not from Lawrence....
Tue, October 25, 2005 - 2:36 PMAmira's troupe is still here. If you go to my profile, you can link to the Amira productions Tribe site. You can also see lots of Wichita bellydance photos posted on my profile taken over the last few months. The RenFest performances were a blast recently! There was a rift between the Amira and Safira schools but I think they are going to try to resolve it with a combined Hafla soon. I think the problem is essentially that there is too much competition for too few bellydance opportunities.
Yes, I remember those quiet Lawrence summers. I used to take wonderful long walks along the Kaw River and watch the eagles. A few years of flooding eroded the paths thought and downtown corporate development diminished that joy. I do wish some things would just stay the same sometimes.
I've got lots of photos taken on the KU campus and Lawrence city parks from the 60s.....maybe I should post some. I worked for KU through the 80s. I'm at WSU now...same bureaucracy....same personality types, etc. They are exactly the same! No Sunday afternoon Carillon concerts though. I do miss my cool Lawrence friends. The long-term Lawrence residents seemed more laid-back to me than your average Wichitans.
Sorry to take so long to respond, Jemira....It's been a busy time.

Tue, October 25, 2005 - 6:55 PMNo worries, tis a busy time for dancing!
I wish somethings would stay the same too....
Glad to hear that people are trying to resolve the rift down there. We are too few in numbers to let crap come in and ruin it for all. I hope the hafla goes well ... keep my fingures crossed for you.
Do post some old pictures of Lawrence ... that would be cool.
Happy dancing to you,
Jemira
